Reactive Recruitment are proud to be working with one of the UKs leading distribution companies. Due to expansion, their specialist freight division are looking for an experienced Customs Clerk to join their expanding team based in Bedford.

The role:

  • Collating and checking documents relating to import & export shipments
  • Signing of documents under a Power of Attorney on behalf of clients
  • Recognise client commercial invoice(s) and packing list(s) extracting data as necessary to complete import and export declarations
  • Liaising with importers/exporters and internal operational colleagues to obtain mandatory information for import and export entries
  • Aiding clients on the classification of goods and their importance
  • Entering details onto specialised software connecting to CHIEF/CDS
  • Preparation of necessary import/export documentation, including T-forms, EUR1’s, Certificates of Origin (CofO), CVED and other cargo control documents

The person:

  • Previous experience working in a similar Customs role
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the Customs tariff is required and application of the relevant procedures is essential.
  • Familiar with different export/import regimes and different modes of transport
  • Experience of using deferment accounts and FAS payment systems
  • Formal training & detailed knowledge of customs import & export processes
  • Understanding of the impact of incorrect or false information in Customs declarations
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Attention for detail as you will be required to compile documentation and be able to interpret the legal requirements on behalf of customers in a clear and simple way; high accuracy of record keeping
  • Strong interpersonal skills; confident communicator
  • Good problem solving capability & able to apply critical thinking skills; ability to actively listen and interpret information timely & accurately
  • Self-motivating and be able to organise your work effectively
  • Ability to operate windows based applications and any other software that is standard within the industry
  • Work in a fast paced environment ensuring clearance processes are completed in a compliant and timely manner
  • Excellent numerical skills are essential due to the calculation of VAT and Duty on behalf of HMRC

The package & hours:

  • A good starting salary of between £27-29,000 p/a
  • Excellent benefits package
  • Monday to Friday 8-430 or 830-5
